WHY IS THE CATCH SET-UP SO IMPORTANT?

blakeBlake Hara:

Because it’s the opportunity for an athlete to ensure they’re initiating the stroke cycle with a fully engaged and prepared core. This is why it’s critical that coaches and athletes not totally depend on stroke rates and other external performance indicators when trying to gauge effort and workout intensity. No matter what paddling discipline, or even sport, effective “set-up” positions usually produce efficient and engaged execution phases.

While it’s useful, and important, to use external performance indicators, it’s also a good idea to revisit basic technique frequently to ensure athletes are maximizing their core involvement starting at the catch.
